Abstract: DESCRIPTION (provided by candidate): The proposed study will describe the dietary intake among Hispanic women with reported substance abuse and how it relates to the varying levels of illicit drugs use, heavy alcohol use and/or non-medical use of prescription drugs. An observable association between dietary patterns and addiction severity may contribute to increase our understanding of the health consequences of drug abuse by a measure of dietary quality and to target interventions for substance abusers. Hispanic women have been identified as having low prevalence rates for substance abuse as compared to men, thus, have not been the main focus of substance abuse research. However, factors such as acculturation, which has been positively associated with substance abuse and to changes in diet, and the expected growth of the Hispanic population demands the attention of this population to describe and identify dietary patterns and quality as they relate to substance use or abuse. Poor dietary quality and/or nutritional deficiencies may worsen concomitant illnesses and according to animal studies may increase toxicity of certain drugs. Future research can build on these data to develop interventions for this population and it can help uncover mediating effects on the health consequences of substance abuse.
